    Installing SQL 2000 Results in 703 Error – Internal Read Error… LOCAL.INS

If you got this error, you probably got a ‘space’ somewhere in your TMP and TEMP system variable.  To check:

    1. Kick up a command prompt
    2. run ‘set’
    3. Look for the TMP and TEMP variables and see if these paths have a space in them (e.g. c:\documents and settings\chewyc\temp)

To fix this, you need to temporarly modify your TMP and TEMP variables for the install.

    1. Right click on ‘My Computer’ and choose ‘Properties’
    2. Click the ‘Advanced’ tab
    3. Click the ‘Environment Variables’ button
    4. Edit the TEMP and TMP user variables to reference a path that has NO spaces (e.g. c:\temp)

    Done.  SQL should install fine.

Hack: Use Local HAT to Monitor Remote BizTalk Server

I wanted to use my local copy of the BizTalk Health and Activity Tracking app to monitor a remote BizTalk server.  I couldn’t find a way to do this without screwing up my current development installation (have to run configframework to become a member of the target server group… or whatever the term is).

Well, I whipped out regedit and poked around.  I was able to modify the following registry key setting to reference the target server’s management DB and have it all work.  Be sure to copy down the existing value so you can rollback.

    KEY: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\BizTalk Server\3.0\Administration

    VALUE: MgmtDBServer (REG_SZ)

I was surprised how easy this was.  Not sure if there’s a more proper (non-hack) way of doing this.  Give me a shout if you do know of a way.
