Microsoft Research, Microsoft IP Ventures and The "Minority Report" User Interface
In my Feb MSDN Connection Evening, I talked about how Microsoft invests a whole heck lot of resources into research. There actually is a group within Microsoft focused on research (appropriately called Microsoft Research). Did you know that only a small, small, small portion of the output from Microsoft Research actually makes it into a Microsoft Product? So what happens to the rest?
Well… last year, a group called Microsoft IP Ventures was created to package up some of the “cream” output from Microsoft Research to be licensed out. I was fortunate enough to meet with them during their visit to Singapore. They had some really cool demos of what is in their catalog of IPs. The one that knocked my socks off was the “Minority Report” UI. I shouldn’t be calling it that as this product spurred what we saw in the movie (yup… this UI was in action before the movie came out).

Check out the catalog of Microsoft IP available for commercial consumption (anyone can use this IP… even people in the Linux world can get access).
