SumoRobots with Robotics Studio at TechEd Malaysia 2007

The folks at TechEd Malaysia is organizing a SumoRobot competition for the event (and possibly even post TechEd).  Anyhow, I’m leaving a set of SumoRobots in Malaysia so if you’re keen to run a competition of your own… contact your friendly Malaysia Developer Evangelists (Walter or Rohan).

I’ve been getting lots of questions at the event so I’m putting a collection of answers here:

Q: How do I get a physical robot to test my code on?

A: You don’t need a physical robot as you can test your code with a simulated robot in your Robotics Studio tool.  You code your logic first and ensure you like the results of your robot.  For TechEd Malaysia (and all the Sumo competitions we’re doing in Singapore), we will host the competition virtually.  Only the last few rounds will be done via the physical robots.

Q: Where can I get the SumoRobot application?

A: Technically, there is no single “SumoRobot” application… rather, you need Microsoft Robotics Studio first then install the SumoRobot additions on top of it.  It is also a good idea to have Visual Studio installed to cut code.

More details about what you need here:

Q: I love these robots!  Where can I buy one?

A: The “sumo” robot is actually a composition of three things.  The iRobot base (white round thing), the ICOP eBOX computer (silver box) and a normal Logitech Quickcam.  Oh yeah, don’t forget all the cables / batteries to glue it all together.  More details including the plans for the acrylic pieces can be found here:

As this week progresses, I’ll keep updating this blog entry.

For those of you who missed the lab, you can do the lab yourself from the comfort of your PC.  How?  Glad you asked.

    First, download PowerShell:
