Big THANK YOU to Singapore Hoster "8 to Infinity"

One of the great parts of this job is getting to meet some super cool people.  When I first started here in Singapore about 2 years  ago (yes… it has been almost 2 years), the previous evangelist gave me a list of 3 people to connect with and one of them was a guy named Boon at a hoster called 8 to Infinity.  My interaction with Boon was among one of my first taste of “Singapore efficiency”.  As I needed his help with setting up my blog and hosting for our local community user groups, I allocated a few weeks to get it done as I thought there would be a lot of back-and-forth (based on my experience back home with hosters in Australia and the US).  Well, about 3 days later… my blog was up and I was lock-n-loaded to execute on behalf of my local user group.  Most of the delay was on my end as I take a while to get to my emails.

Well, recently… I needed Boon’s help to troubleshoot some issues I had with Sky Drive’s iframe rendering on Community Server.  All my support requests were acted on within minutes.  Singapore rocks!  Boon… you rock!

Anyhow, this isn’t really a technical post but rather… I wanted to publicly thank Boon and 8 to Infinity for being so supportive.  I love you guys. xoxo

Singapore Maps with Virtual Earth and Best.SG

During this week’s MSDN TechTalks, I showed a 15 min demo where I built a website from scratch that allows the user to type in their Singapore postal code and a Singapore map shows up with a pin on top of the postal code (every postal code represent a distinct building unlike others where the code can specify a geographical region).

This demo has resonated quite well with the attendees at the event.  A number of them wanted to see the code so they can build a “here are my stores” map and embedded into their web sites.  As such, I just recorded a video of me doing the exact same demo but with more commentary of my code.  Here’s my video and a copy of the resulting code from the video demo.

The Postal2Gps web service used is a web service we built to wrap a raw JSP service from Best.SG.  You need to sign up for a developer ID from Best.SG to make use of their service.  The web service wrapper we used will be updated by the end of Oct to allow you to type in your own developer ID.

If you folks build geo-aware apps, I would love to hear about it and may potentially be able to get a camera crew out to see it in action.  Drop me an email at chewyc at microsoft dot com.

MSDN TechTalk Day – Tues Oct 16 (Enterprise Development and the Next Web)

So I’ve been busy this past month organizing our upcoming full day of technical developer content.  I am happy to report that the sessions are close to being locked and loaded for the event.  As of Oct 2, here is what we have lined up for our Oct TechTalk event.

The sessions are going to be excellent.  We have assembled some of the best technical speakers in Singapore working in many different industries.  Over the next week, I will try to get you a video preview of each session to help you decide align your needs to the sessions available.

Keep an eye on this blog for updates.

SGDOTNET User Group Evening – Thurs Oct 4 (VSTS and .NET with Embedded Devices)

The folks at SGDOTNET have yet another exciting evening planned for Singapore (even more so as yours truly been invited to speak :) ).

    Thursday Oct 4, 2007
    1830 – 1900 Registration
1900 – 2000 Topic 1 – Best Practices for Team Based Software Development
    2000 – 2010 Break
2010 – 2110 Topic 2 – Fun with .NET and Embedded Devices (Phidgets)

They have a guest expert from Australia (Anthony Borton) so this should be quite an eventful evening.

As for my session… I’ll show everyone how to build their own power meter with an embedded device, an amp sensor and (of course) .NET!  I only recently found out how easily we can interface physical sensors / motors up to .NET.  A company in Canada called Phidgets (http://www.phidgets.com) makes low cost sensors and controllers plus they provide .NET drivers / interfaces for everything they sell.  Check out my video below.

    [soapbox:fa21c147-9245-40e2-817f-90891a201aee]

If you can’t make my session, you should check out their site.  Any serious .NET developer should have something like this at home for those “weekend” projects.

Register for the event here: http://www.sgdotnet.org/Docs/Lists/1007%20SGDN/NewForm.aspx
